General information:

To register a marriage, birth or death which occurred abroad, it is compulsory to submit the original certificate issued by the local Authorities. Once you are in possession of the appropriate certificate, you must send it, together with the relevant request form (Request for birth registrationRequest for marriage registration) to the Consular section of the Embassy by courier or deliver it in person (see below).

  • For registration of a death certificate, it is not necessary to complete a request form
  • To register a divorce, please consult the relevant section under legalization and translation of documents
  • Do not send laminated  certificates as those cannot be stamped by the Embassy for registration.
  • The service for the registration in Italy of civil status records is provided free of charge.
  • Certificates required for registration in Italy will NOT be returned.

No appointment is required for the submission of documents.

Original documents must be delivered to the Embassy’s Guards in a sealed envelope addressed to the Consular Section during the following hours:

  • Monday to Thursday: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

or sent by DHL or Fedex courier.

 

MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE

In Zambia, marriage certificates must be requested to the Registrar General’s Office in Lusaka (Dedan Kimathi /corner Independence Avenue) upon presentation of the certificate issued by the Church or City Council.

For registration in Italy it is mandatory to submit the original marriage certificate issued by the Registrar General.

In Malawi, marriage certificates must be requested to the Registrar General’s Office in Lilongwe or Blantyre upon presentation of the certificate issued by the Church or City Council. The certificate issued by the Registrar General should then be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Lilongwe for the  Apostille so legalization is not required (see facsimile Apostille Malawi – for use in Italy).

 

BIRTH CERTIFICATES

Following the entry into force of the new legislation on the acquisition of Italian citizenship (Decree Law No. 36/2025 and Law No. 74/20225), the registration of birth certificates is no longer automatic for children of dual citizens. Therefore, the requirements indicated in point 2.4 of the  must be verified in advance by writing to the Consular Office at consolare.lusaka@esteri.it  which of the described cases is applicable in order to receive the list of documents to be submitted in support of the registration of birth.
