The Italian driving license is valid for 90 days from the date of entry into Zambia and Malawi. It can therefore be used by visitors traveling for tourism or other short-term purposes.
For stays longer than 90 days, drivers must hold an International Driving Permit, which must be requested in Italy and is valid until the expiry date indicated (normally 12 months), or alternatively obtain a local driving license.
Zambia and Malawi have not signed reciprocity agreements with Italy regarding the conversion of driving licenses. The Italian license cannot be converted or recognized.
For the issuance of a local license, the authorities generally require a certificate of validity of the Italian driving license. This document must be obtained in Italy from the Motor Vehicle Authority (Motorizzazione Civile).
Renewal of Italian Driving Licenses Expired During Residence Abroad Individuals who reside or stay for at least 6 months in non-EU countries may request from the Embassy confirmation of validity for an Italian driving license expired for no more than 5 years (this applies to both Italian and foreign citizens).
Drivers falling under the cases provided for by Article 119 of the Italian Highway Code are excluded (for example, individuals with diabetes or those required to obtain certification of fitness from medical commissions).

1. Medical certificate Medical certificate and courtesy translation for driving license with translation duly completed by the Embassy’s authorized medical officers
2. A recent passport size photograph, in colour, with a white background
3. The expired license
4. Payment of the consular fee (see consular fees table art. 66D)
