Bilateral relations
Italy and Malawi enjoy excellent bilateral relations, limited cooperation in the economic and cultural fields notwithstanding. In June 2024, Malawi was included in the list of priority countries for the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. The priority areas for Italian financial aid will comprise the agri-food sector, basic services access and natural resource management with a view to protecting the environment.
In 2023, total value of trade between Italy and Zambia amounted to €11.7 million.
So far, Italian investment has been marginal. Entrepreneurs established in the country have been active in the tourism, agricultural, trade, services and construction sectors. The sugar and biofuels sectors offer interesting prospects which deserve careful consideration. Though small, the Italian entrepreneurial presence is traditionally appreciated for its flexibility and ability. Our companies are seen as viable alternatives to other foreign partners.
Malawi is among the countries receiving scholarships from the Italian government; in particular, 18 monthly grants have been awarded to Malawi students for the 2024/2025 academic year.
