MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE
In Zambia, marriage certificates must be requested to the Registrar General’s Office in Lusaka (Dedan Kimathi /corner Independence Avenue) upon presentation of the certificate issued by the Church or City Council.
For registration in Italy it is mandatory to submit the original marriage certificate issued by the Registrar General.
In Malawi, marriage certificates must be requested to the Registrar General’s Office in Lilongwe or Blantyre upon presentation of the certificare issued by the Church or City Council. The certificate issued by the Registrar General should then be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Lilongwe for apostille so legalization is not required (see facsimile Apostille Malawi – for use in Italy).
Please note:
- Once you are in possession of the appropriate certificate, you must send it to the Consular section of the Embassy by courier or deliver it in person together with the relevant request form: Request for birth registration – Request for marriage registration
- Registration of birth/death/marriage in Italy is free of charge
- Certificates required for registration in Italy will NOT be returned.
DEATH CERTIFICATES

For registration in Italy it is mandatory to submit the original DEATH CERTIFICATE or DUPLICATE DEATH CERTIFICATE (see facsimile ZAMBIA New certificate and Duplicate certificate)
In Malawi, the death certificate should be requested to the Registrar’s Office in Lilongwe or Blantyre upon presentation of the documents issued by the health authority (notice of death). BIRTH CERTIFICATES
Following the entry into force of the new legislation on the acquisition of Italian citizenship (Decree Law No. 36/2025 and Law No. 74/20225), the registration of birth certificates is no longer automatic for children of dual citizens. Therefore, the requirements indicated in point 2.4 of the Citizenship section must be verified in advance by writing to the Consular Office at consolare.lusaka@esteri.it which of the described cases is applicable. Once confirmation has been received the registration process can proceed.
