Italian driving licenses can be used for a maximum period of 90 days from entry into Zambia and Malawi. International driving licence, on the other hand, can be used until the expiry date therein indicated.
Holders of an Italian driving licenses (Italian or foreign Nationals) residing or staying for a period of at least 6 months in non-EU countries, can obtain confirmation from the Embassy of the validity of their Italian driving licence, which has expired no more than five years before, .
Drivers falling within the cases provided for in art. 119, comma 2-bis and 4 of the Highway Code (licences for diabetic drivers or for drivers whose psycho-physical suitability must be certified by specific medical commissions) are excluded from this option.
Interested parties will have to carry out the required medical examination to ascertain their mental and physical requirements through the Embassy’s medical officer who will have to complete the medical certificate.
Residents in Zambia and Malawi (Italian Nationals registered with AIRE and/or foreign Nationals) can request the issuance of confirmation of the validity of their Italian driving license at this Embassy by presenting the following documentation:
1. Medical certificate Medical certificate and courtesy translation for driving license with translation duly completed by the Embassy’s authorized medical officers
2. A recent passport size photograph, in colour, with a white background
3. The expired license
4. Payment of the consular fee (see consular fees table art. 66D)
The above documentation must be sent by courier (for Malawi DHL – for Zambia DHL or Fedex) or delivered to the Embassy guards – in a sealed envelope addressed to the Consular Office – from Monday to Thursday between 9:00 and 14:30 ensuring to enclose updated e-mail address and telephone number.
As soon as the procedure is completed, interested parties will be contacted for collection, also by means of a delegated person or courier.
