Passports and identity cards

This Embassy is responsible for issuing passports to Italian citizens residing in Zambia and Malawi who are duly registered with A.I.R.E. Residents not yet registered may submit a passport application only after verifying that their online AIRE registration request (including complete and adequate documentation) through the Fast-It portal appears as “transmitted to the Municipality” (it is not sufficient for it to be simply “submitted”).

Changes in residence abroad (physical address, telephone and email contacts, updated local residence/work permits, etc.) and civil status (birth of children, marriage, divorce, etc.) must also be duly updated.

Those who have not submitted their AIRE registration or data update request through the above-mentioned portal may contact the Consular Office directly.

Passport applications are processed exclusively by appointment on Wednesdays. Appointments must be requested from the Consular Office at consolare.lusaka@esteri.it.

Declaration of Accompaniment – Minor under 14 years of age

Pursuant to Article 14 of Law 1185/1967, if a minor under 14 years of age, holding an individual passport, is to travel abroad accompanied by someone other than the parents or entrusted to airline personnel, the competent consular authority (the representation abroad in whose district the applicant resides or another designated Office) must indicate on the minor’s passport the name of the person, entity, or transport company to whom the minor is entrusted, or, in exceptional cases, issue a declaration of accompaniment.

Both parents must complete the relevant form and send it to the Consular Office in order to schedule an appointment.

Identity Cards

This Embassy is not currently authorized to issue identity cards.

Please note that paper identity cards will cease to be valid as of 3 August 2026, regardless of their stated expiry date. They will be replaced by Electronic Identity Cards (CIE), which must be requested from the Municipality of AIRE registration.

Notice for travellers to the United Kingdom (ETA)

The ETA requirement formally came into effect for European citizens on April 2, 2025, although the British authorities had not strictly enforced this obligation until now. Starting from February 25, 2026, however, it will no longer be possible to travel to the United Kingdom without first obtaining an ETA.

The authorization can only be requested online, either through a dedicated application or via the official website (How to apply – Apply for an ETA to come to the UK – GOV.UK), with a response provided within a maximum of 3 working days.
