Tax ID code

The Tax Code is a personal code issued by the Italian Revenue Agency to identify citizens, Italian or foreigners, in relation to Public Administrations and entities.

It is compulsory for some fiscal or legal procedures, to grant power of attorney, for financial operations regarding any type of movable and immovable asset subject to taxation in Italy.

From date of issue, the Tax Code has no expiry date.

The Tax Code in no longer available in card format and it is printed on the Electronic Identity Card.

1. HOW TO APPLY (APPLICABLE TO ITALIAN CITIZENS REGISTERED WITH AIRE)

Italian citizens registered with AIRE may dowload it directly through the  FastIT portal, following the relevant online procedure. Such certificat may be used to obtain SPID (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale) credentials.

2. Should there be any problems with the online request, applicants may send an email to  consolare.lusaka@esteri.it attaching the following scanned documents in low resolution .pdf  format (NOT photos):

  • Application form duly completed and signed (do ensure to mark box 4 in section II)
  • Passport copy (pages 2 and 3).

The Embassy will receive the certificate, which will be sent by email to the applicant. The original will remain on file at the Embassy until collection by the applicant.

3. APPLICATION PROCEDURES FOR FOREIGN CITIZENS NOT RESIDENT IN ITALY

STUDENTS The tax code (codice fiscale) required for university pre-enrollment can be requested directly in Italy at the following offices:

  • EU students: Agenzia delle Entrate (Revenue Agency) offices
  • Non-EU students: Questura (Police Headquarters) where the residence permit is requested

FOR THOSE PURCHASING PROPERTY OR UNDERTAKING COMMERCIAL/FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES

The tax code for property purchases or other commercial/financial activities in Italy can be requested:

  • In person at the Agenzia delle Entrate offices
  • By delegating a representative in Italy through a notarized power of attorney
  • Through the relevant Consular Office

Foreign citizens may request the tax code at the Consular Office of this Embassy if they are unable to delegate a representative to apply at the Agenzia delle Entrate, or if the code is required for online procedures.

To do so, please send an email to consolare.lusaka@esteri.it, attaching the following documents scanned in low-resolution PDF format (not photos):

  • Completed and signed “Attribution and Certificate of Tax Code (Foreign Citizen)” Form 
  • Valid passport consistent with birth certificate data (or identity card if no passport is available)
  • Proof of address in Zambia/Malawi
  • Documentation supporting the reason for the request

If the request concerns a minor, the identity documents of both parents must also be provided.

The applicant will receive a copy of the tax code by email within 7–10 working days from receipt of the application, provided it is complete and compliant. The original will be kept at the Embassy until collected by the applicant (in person or via courier at their own expense).

 

NON-EU CITIZENS INTENDING TO STAY IN ITALY

The tax code may be issued by:

  • Immigration Desk (Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione) at each Prefecture, responsible for authorizing entry for foreign citizens applying for residence permits for employment or family reunification
  • Questura (Police Headquarters), for foreign citizens applying for other types of residence permits
