The Secrets of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel

“The secrets of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel”, the second of a cycle of conferences organized by the Embassy and curated by Prof. Costantino D’Orazio, dedicated to illustrate some visual  masterpieces by Maestro Michelangelo, was held in digital mode and in physical presence at the Italian Zambian Cultural Center. This made it possible to involve a larger number of participants, in compliance with local Covid-19 provisions. The Faculty of Fine Arts of the University (UNZA) participated largely in the cultural initiative, confirming how important the sector is for the development of relations between the two countries.

The conference addressed both historical-artistic issues and more technical themes, which enhanced Italian excellence in the restoration of Cultural Heritage. In his speech, Professor D’Orazio illustrated a brief artistic excursus by Michelangelo in the context of the historical period and the painting techniques of the time. He then focused on the paintings of the Sistine Chapel, on the changes in iconography resulting from the study during the long time Michelangelo spent on his masterpiece. In the second part of the conference Professor D’Orazio highlighted the details of the “Last Judgment” by interpretations not yet unveiled and illustrating to the participants the restoration techniques to the works of Great Michelangelo which have succeeded over times showing historical videos that have illustrated the restoration techniques used in the Sistine Chapel. The final session dedicated to audience’s questions was very dense, and seen the high interest especially of the students, Prof. D’Orazio made himself available to continue the debate with the participants and students by email in the following days.
