Zambia and Malawi in-depth
FOR CITIZENSHIP APPLICATIONS
Zambian or foreign nationals who reside/have resided in Zambia and are applying for Italian citizenship in Italy, must obtain a Police Clearance and birth certificate in Zambia.
- The Police clearance should be obtained from the Central Police Office in Lusaka. This certificate must be completed with the fingerprint page which can be acquired from the same office in Lusaka or in Italy from the Police authorities.
 - The birth certificate should be obtained from the Registrar General’s Office in Lusaka (Dedan Kimathi /corner Independence Avenue). It is mandatory to present the original (see facsimile ZAMBIA New certificate and Duplicate certificate
 
The Embassy provides legalization of both documents (for costs, see art. 69 of the consular table for the Police Clearance and art. 7 for the birth certificate).
For translations, in Zambia one can turn to the Italian School in Lusaka, Lubu Road, tel. 0211 254181, in Italy to sworn translators at the Court in the city of residence.
Documents translated in Zambia must be certified by the Embassy (for costs see Art. 72A for each page of translation). The table can be found at the following link.
For legalization and confirmation of translation of the above listed documents, appointments are NOT necessary.
The original documents, together with the relevant payment and a copy of the applicant’s passport, should be handed in to the Embassy’s Guards – in a sealed envelope addressed to the Consular Section, bearing the applicant’s name and e-mail address – Monday to Thursday between 9:00 and 15:00, Friday from 9:00 until 12:30. This procedure may be entrusted to a third party.
Alternatively, documents may be sent by courier (Fedex or DHL).
The Consular section will contact the applicant to arrange for collection in due course.

Malawian citizens or foreigners who reside/have resided in Malawi and are applying for Italian citizenship in Italy, must obtain the Police Clearance and birth certificate in Malawi.
- the Police Clearance should be obtained from the Central Police Office in Lilongwe
 - the Birth Certificate at the Registrar Office in Lilongwe or Blantyre.
 - All certificates should then be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Lilongwe for Apostille so legalization is not necessary (see facsimile Apostille Malawi).
 
For translations, in Malawi one can ask the honorary consuls, for information, in Italy one can turn to sworn translators at the Court of the city of residence.
Documents translated in Malawi must be certified by the Embassy (for costs see Art. 72A for each page of translation). The table can be found at the following link.

FOR OTHER PURPOSES
ZAMBIA – translations and legalizations

 - Divorce Certificates (Decree Nisi and Decree Absolute) should be obtained from the Court that issued them
 - For adoption purposes (all documents in original):
 
- adoption certificate issued by the Registrar General’s Office in Lusaka (Dedan Kimathi /corner Independence Avenue)
 - adoption certificate issued by the competent court
 - international adoption order issued by the competent Social Services Department
 - birth certificate issued by the Registrar General’s Office in Lusaka (Dedan Kimathi /corner Independence Avenue)
 
- Affidavits – to be valid/recognized in Italy they MUST be signed before a NOTARY, documents authenticated by a Commissioner for Oaths are not accepted
 - Consents for the issuance of passports in favor of Italian minors by parents who are not EU citizens MUST be signed before a NOTARY, documents authenticated by a Commissioner for Oaths are not accepted
 - Educational qualifications – issued by colleges and universities recognized by the Zambian government (fee is charged for professional use)
