VIVA DANTE – Ravenna 2020 – 2021

The 7th Centenary of the death of the Bard Poet Dante Alighieri is on 13 September 2020.

The celebrations for the seventh centenary of Dante’s death in the city that hosts his remains are linked to an uninterrupted tradition: Ravenna, which every day “breathes Dante” honors the poet since that night between 13 and 14 September 1321, when he finished the deadly adventure of the Poet, consigned to the eternity of memory. Dante in Ravenna has always represented the object of a shared planning, which knows how to arouse everyone’s interest, reflection and creativity.

President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will open, on September 5th in Ravenna, the celebrations of the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri: at 20.30 hrs the solemn reopening of the tomb and the nearby Quadrarco of Braccioforte, at the end of a restoration intervention on the notes of a concert that sees illustrious voices from the Italian music scene playing verses of the Divine Comedy. The entire event will be broadcast in live streaming on the page: www.ravennafestival.live/live-stream  and will also be visible on a maxi screen in Piazza del Popolo.

On September 13th , from 9.30 am, the annual Mass will be celebrated in the basilica of San Francesco, where Dante’s funeral was held, and the offering of oil for the votive lamp at Dante’s tomb; from 14 September 2020, every day perpetually, a song from the Divine Comedy will be read.
The many celebratory initiatives that will involve the city, Emilia Romagna region and the whole of Italy will last for a year, until Sunday 12th September 2021, ending with a concert by maestro Riccardo Muti in Piazza San Francesco.
