For further details on the current legislation, please refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esteri.it\/it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/italiani-all-estero\/cittadinanza\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Citizenship \u2013 Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application for Italian Citizenship by Children of Italian Citizens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the new legislation (Decree-Law No. 36 of 28 March 2025, converted with amendments into Law No. 74 of 23 May 2025, in force since 24 May 2025, amending Law No. 91 of 5 February 1992), a person <strong>born abroad<\/strong> to an <strong>Italian parent is not automatically an Italian citizen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Italian citizenship is acquired automatically only if at least one of the following conditions applies:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>One parent or one grandparent (first- or second-degree ascendant) holds, or held at the time of death, <strong>exclusively Italian citizenship<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>One parent or adoptive parent was legally <strong>resident in Italy for at least two consecutive years<\/strong> after acquiring Italian citizenship and before the birth of the child (see <a href=\"https:\/\/amblusaka.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/A-Case-1-2-Evaluation-of-applications-pursuant-to-Decree-36-Law-74-2025.pdf\">Case 1-2 Evaluation of applications pursuant to Decree 36-Law 74-2025<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>If neither of the above conditions applies, and <strong>one of the parents has been an Italian citizen since birth<\/strong>, both parents may, within three years of the child&#8217;s birth, sign a declaration requesting Italian citizenship on behalf of the minor (see \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amblusaka.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Case-3.pdf\">Case 3<\/a> Evaluation of application pursuant to article 4)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Application for Italian Citizenship by Spouses of Italian Citizens<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Applications must be submitted exclusively through the Ministry of the Interior&#8217;s dedicated online portal: <a href=\"https:\/\/portaleservizi.dlci.interno.it\/AliCittadinanza\/ali\/home.htm?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Citizenship Application Portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Italian citizens resident abroad can register without SPID, using their email address. Login credentials should be kept carefully, as all communications concerning the application will be sent through the above-mentioned portal.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants must enter their personal details with the utmost care, as these details cannot subsequently be amended. In the event of an error, a new registration must be made using a different email address. Women must enter their maiden name, as shown on their birth certificate.<\/p>\n<p>Persons resident in Zambia and Malawi are strongly advised to contact the Consular Office of the Embassy (<a href=\"mailto:consolare.lusaka@esteri.it\">consolare.lusaka@esteri.it<\/a>) <strong>before completing the application submission stage<\/strong>.
