On February 13th, H.E. the Ambassador of Italy, Filippo Scammacca del Murgo, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Zambia (UNZA), prof. Luke E. Mumba, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that creates a framework to facilitate the teaching of Italian language at UNZA. The MoU wants to formalize the will to include Italian among the languages taught to the students and defines the modalities for the realization of the project.
During the exchange of views that preceded the signing of the MoU, it was agreed both on the importance of teaching Italian, in particular in the context of economic relations between Zambia and Italy, and on the importance of exchanges between young people, given that the experience offers stimuli and extremely useful references. H.E. Ambassador Scammacca recalled that after many years the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) has since last year granted a scholarship to young Zambians who wish to study at Italian universities. For its part, UNZA has reported that it is near to formalize a MoU with the University of Perugia inspired by youth exchanges, facilitated by the granting of scholarships and the training of professors.
The start of the teaching of Italian at UNZA should have synergistic effects with the activities of the Italian School of Lusaka, where the actions that MAECI has opportunely started for the strengthening of the teaching of the Italian language could increase among the students motivations and incentives for a greater commitment to learning our language.
