Italian Cooperation to Development

Italian Cooperation to Development

The Italian Cooperation has disbursed loans to Zambia for a total of over 65 million Euros from 1983 to 2009, the year in which, having become a medium-income developing country, it ceased to be part of the recipients of the programs priority.
In 2018, the Italian Cooperation ordered an emergency financing of 250,000 Euros in favor of the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) for humanitarian activities in support of Congolese refugees in Zambia fleeing the fighting in the DRC.
In 2019, the Italian Cooperation ordered an emergency contribution of 500,000 Euros in favor of WFP (World Food Program) for activities aimed at food assistance in Zambia for populations in need following the serious drought that hit the country.

Italy also continues its important multilateral support to the 11th European Union Development Fund (EDF); our contribution to the financing of EU projects in Zambia between 2014 and 2020 is about EUR 67.76 million, including the WHO's Global Fund for combating AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, of which our country is a significant contributor.

There are some collaborations in the health sector; one is between the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Abruzzo and Molise "G. Corporal ”of Teramo and the department of the Central Veterinary Research Institute of Chilanga aimed at an identification project in the search for a vaccine against the“ Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumoniale ”.

Italy for a long time, up to date, has been engaged in the territory through civil society organizations and religious congregation with numerous innovative projects in various sectors and with a high social impact, with the aim of improving the living conditions of most vulnerable populations. There are numerous Italian entities that finance development projects through Italian Non-Governmental Organizations which operate in Zambia and local organizations that receive donations. It is worth to remember that development projects in Zambia are funded largely by the European Union which also makes use of Italian contributions.

The 'Programs' section lists the development projects in Zambia supported by Italy.
